Is lacquer and Polyurethane the same for woodworking?

So I’ve been strongly considering getting two gerbils, which I would keep in a 10 gallon aquarium (as opposed to a plastic or metal cage that they can chew through). However, I have two cats, and both of them have claws. The standard lid for this kind of aquarium would just be a mesh top, but I’m concerned that it wouldn’t be strong enough to support the weight of one of my cats climbing on top, or it might rip if the cats clawed at it. Does anyone have any ideas for how I can create a cat-proof lid?
Just some extra info…
– I was thinking of maybe using a smell that cats dislike, such as citronella oil, but I’m worried that it might harm the gerbils. Does anyone know about this?
– I can’t keep my cats out of my bedroom (where the gerbils will be) because the house has shifted, and my door no longer closes completely
– I have a tall bookcase I could potentially set the cage on, but I’m worried about the cats trying to jump up there and knocking things off (like the cage)! Thoughts?
Thanks so much for your help… unless I find a good solution, I won’t be able to get gerbils.
It still looks pretty plain to me, and I was thinking about adding a black/white wallpaper designed backing? Or maybe doing something along the outside… help?

I am getting a hamster this week and though I’ve read tons of information on how to care about it, I can’t find any particular info on where I shall put it’s cage.
The best place I could come up with, it’s my computer desk. It is high so my dog won’t be able to get to hamster, it is far from straight sun light and cold air-flow yet its near computer.
Any advice?
Mine can be in the Adult Fiction section.
I’ve started to remodel my room and I need help! To give you an idea…..
I’m painting my walls this color: http://i37.tinypic.com/mt88yx.png
The crown molding and trim will be white.
The floors will be this color: http://www.armstrong.com/flooring/laminate/blizzard-pine-wood-plank-L8703/floor-114379.asp
It’s going to be a very neutral room. I’m planning on getting colorful bedding and hanging up art to give the room some flair. The problem is…I don’t know what color furniture I should purchase! I’m going to get a bedside table, a desk, and two bookcases…
I don’t know whether to go with white furniture because I don’t know if that will make the room too stark white…and then, I don’t want to get wood furniture because I hate when different wood colors clash within one room :/ ARGH! What do you think? White or some kind of wood color?
The side that would normally be up against the wall… I’m thinking of using it as a divider in the middle of a room. Does anyone know?
I set a cup of hot coffee on my computer desk and now there is a bubble forming and a ring mark. Does anyone know how to remove it.
