redecorating for a pink, black, and white mysterious look?

July 31st, 2010

The room is bubblegum pink with white baseboards. It is going to stay that way but I am going to add a thick black stripe through the middle, spreading along the walls, all through the room.

The bed is a twin. A white iron looking bed that used to be a canopy. I have since gotten rid of the canopy part.

The furniture I plan to get will be modern looking.

(printer stand to be used as a bed side table)

The dresser will be white to keep the bed tied in.

Chairs in the room will be black.

MY PROBLEM IS:
I want there to be enough black so the room isn’t over powered with pink and white. However, I want a balance.
Bedding is kicking my butt. I want something slightly mysterious that i can pull a theme from to incorporate into the rest of the room.

I need a bookcase that can hold about 40 lbs of books per shelf?

July 31st, 2010

What wood is strongest when it comes to holding heavy books? Will it start to give once it hits a certain width, regardless of wood type? How thick (dense) would it need to be to hold the books? I need each shelf to be between 35-40 inches wide. Does anyone know who would carry something like that in New York City? Would I need to build it myself?

How to decorate my brick wall with fireplace?

July 30th, 2010

I have a large livingroom with one entire wall of brick, with a wood burning fireplace. The brick color is varied – 70’s style. I have a large, dark stained mantel over the fireplace, and have placed a tall bookcase on either side of the fireplace, but it just doesn’t pop. There is also a brick ledge (approx. 3 bricks deep) along the base of the entire wall. This is perfect height for low-level seating, but I’d have to move the bookcases. My couch and loveseat are brick red with dark wood trim. My room has a hardboard ceiling, similar to original hardwood flooring. I will be painting my walls a sage color. I really need some guidance on the brick wall. I don’t think whitewashing is the answer in my traditional livingroom. Without the bookcases, the wall is plain and flat, with the exception of the mantel. I’m open to ideas.

How can I make this less cliche?

July 29th, 2010

I’m writing a story, and I need some help. It’s basically a hostage situation in a high school. I know that idea has been used a lot, but this is going to be similar to the old move Toy Soldiers. I’m on chapter 4, and in it, Ellie, the main character gets raped by Scars, one of the men holding them. She is caught trying to smuggle out of the kitchen as a weapon so they can escape. Is that too soap drama-y or is it good for a hostage story? Also, I have the final fight between them planned out. They’re running through the library, and they split up on accident. Scars is in there looking for them, and they’re trying to hide. Brady, the main character is crawling, knife in hand, when Scars steps out in front of him. Brady stabs Scars in the crotch for attacking Ellie, and Scars flips. He jumps on Brady, knocking the knife out of his hand. Brady is being choked, reaching for the knife, when he sees Ellie. With superhuman strength (I hate that word, Superhuman) she pulls the bookcase on Scars, killing him. Brady is completely covered by Scars, so he is protected. Her line to that is "Get the f*** off my boyfriend…" and she helps him up. Is this too cliche? I chose this as an ending because each of my chapters is named after a song, and so the song I listened to was Face Down by RJA. One of the lines is "Do you feel like a man, when, you push her around, do you feel better now, as she falls to the ground?" Another is "Face down in the dirt, she said, ‘This doesn’t hurt’, she said, ‘I’ve finally had enough.’ " I think this song fits the situation perfectly! Sorry for ranting, but does this seem too far-fetched, or what? Thanks.

How do I handle an overly- assertive housemate?

July 27th, 2010

I am in my mid-twenties and moved out of my parents’ house about a month ago. I’m living with a girl I’ve known from college for several years. We aren’t close friends, but we know each other better than the average acquaintance. We really haven’t had time to adjust to one another b/c the whole past month she’s been working another job in another city (this only happens during the summer). When moving in, I made her aware of all of the furniture I was bringing. (She had lived in an apartment before, so the majority of the house has been furnished by her.) I have a bookcase/hutch piece that would normally go in my bedroom, but since my bedroom is too small, I have placed it at another spot in the house in the hallway. It doesn’t fit perfectly, but it doesn’t interrupt with any of her furniture, nor with the flow of traffic in the house. I told her ahead of time where I was planning on putting it, and she was neutral. However, when she came home yesterday, she told me she wanted me to move it because it didn’t fit perfectly and that it bothers her being there. She is very assertive, but I felt she was almost being borderline aggressive. I am also assertive, but tend to get flustered when someone acts like this. So, here is my query:
1.) To be "fair", I told her I’d listen to her suggestions on where else this piece should go, but in the end, I don’t want to move my piece. I know we have to have compromise, but I don’t go around asking her to move her furniture if it bothers me. It’s a very heavy, old piece of furniture that has a lot of fragiles displayed and if moved anywhere else, I’m afraid it will get bumped with the house traffic. (Our house is very small and there aren’t a lot of options of places for it to go. Also, it is painted a different color and if it’s put in a room with a lot of different furniture, it starts to look like a hodge-podge of furniture where nothing matches.) Also, since it’s not furniture she is using, I really don’t see how it affects her. I’m not sure if I’m being petty here, but I feel like I need to put my foot down. It feels ridiculous to react this way, but she is getting pushy. Is this an appropriate response from me? What else could I do? Is it appropriate for her to make this call?

2.) How does one handle a person who is borderline aggressive? (It almost feels like a power struggle….)

Last tidbit of info: we are both paying equal rent to live here.
Thank you for your wisdom!
