What would be in your dream classroom?

August 31st, 2010

We are building a new school in the next few years. The teachers have been asked to submit a “Dream Classroom Plan”, what we would get if we had unlimited resources.

I need help! My mind has gone blank!

I already have an Elmo, a large TV, a projector and a microphone system in my classroom.

These are my ideas/student ideas so far for my 7th grade Language Arts classroom:

Dimensions:

Large enough to have a student desk area, a teacher area, a reading circle area, and an open area for movement in class.

Ceilings high enough to hang projects.

Soothing Zen-like paint colors.

Hardwood floor (or a nice fake laminate) or stone like tiles (slate???).

Windows that open with heavy shades for when we use media.

Furniture:

Desks- not tables! Moveable, stackable with unconnected chairs with foot covers so they don’t scratch the tile.

Deep bookcases to hold classroom texts (both sets!), novels, workbooks and the classroom library.

Foldable chairs or pod chairs for the reading circle.

Carpets, mats, pillows for reading

Countertops or tables for extra work space.

Cabinets and closets for storage of foldable chairs and pillows/mats.

Sink- for hand washing, cleaning and access to water.

Ample power outlets

Exercise balls for chairs at desks

White boards

Cork Boards

Electronics/Technology:

Laptops for every student

Soothing light, non fluorescent (desk lamps??)

iPods for each student, to listen to recorded books

Activ/Smart Board

Can you think of any glaring oversight? Would you add anything to the list?

Where can I find custom made furniture from the Amish in Lancaster County?

August 31st, 2010

I’m looking for bookcases and other furniture for my bookstore, but haven’t found any I like, so I thought I’d try seeing if I could get the Amish to make me what I need.

Outdated Wood Trim?

August 29th, 2010

My boyfriend and I are apartment hunting, and we’ve managed to find a favorite- close to both our jobs, great floor plan, in our price range, nice community. Only problem is, the wood trim is so ugly- i’m talking all the doors, the cabinets, the closet doors, and these big built-in bookcases in the living room. It looks like it’s 50 years old. Obviously since it’s an apartment we couldn’t replace it, and we’re not sure yet if we’d be allowed to paint… so I was wondering, is there any certain color schemes or other tricks we could use that would offset it or modernize it a little?
To answer one of the questions… it’s stained, and it’s a really dark, ashy sort of brown. Kind of difficult to describe. I suppose I shouldn’t really say outdated, but it looks like my great-grandma’s kitchen cupboards.

What color should we paint our attic?

August 29th, 2010

The main focus of the room is a bright orange couch. And when I say bright, I mean bright. Everything else in the room is a random mash of desks, bookcases, maps, etc. It’s a large space though, with sloping walls. We’re looking for a color that’s not too strong.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Why would a landlord tape foil around the furniture edges next to the walls?

August 28th, 2010

I went to see a house this weekend and in all the rooms where the bookcases etc touched the walls, the landlord had taped foil between the furniture and the wall. We couldn’t figure out why? Damp? Mice?
Does anyone know, or has anyone done the same thing?
Thanks

How to convert a one bedroom into two?

August 27th, 2010

I’m looking for a clever and inexpensive way to divide a room without using walls or doors that open. Floor to ceiling bookcases and a sliding door are possibilities but I don’t know how to do it. Does anyone have tips or suggestions? Thanks!
