How can I get my brother's room?

September 8th, 2010

Years ago, my older brother and I shared a room. Eventually, However, we split up and I was put into my own room, to the happiness of both of us. He kept the old room and I got what used to be my sister’s room, and my sister moved into what was the playroom with my newborn sister. Another thing I need to mention is that my sisters’ room is huge, but that is appropriate because there are two of them and they have a lot of stuff. My brother’s room is small, and mine is a bit smaller. Our house was really poorly designed. Half of the second floor is comprised of the master bedroom and bathroom, and about a fourth is my sisters’ bedroom and a bathroom that all four kids must share. So, factoring in hallways, that makes our two rooms small. This was one of the reasons that we wanted to split rooms. He got the better room of the two, but I did not mind because it was my own room I was getting. Now, years later, said brother has gone off to college and I have been promised his room. My sister would like to split up with my other sister as well, but I have dibs on my older brother’s room, which means that I will get his and she will get mine. She prefers mine anyway, for some reason.
Here’s the problem: I walk into my brother’s room and It’s full of crap. I don’t mind having some of his stuff in there (I already agreed with him that he can keep some of his books for when he comes home in one of the two shelves) But I do mind not having any room on the dresser, desk, or either or the two bookcases (which he left behind completely filled) at all in which to put my things, or having an abundance of completely filled boxes under the bed. My mom has therefore concluded that before I can move in, we need to complete a room in the unfinished basement where we can set up a room for my brother, where we can move all his stuff into and where he can sleep when he visits during Christmas break or whatever (his college is within an hour or so’s drive). Previously the plan was to put the bed in my room back in my brother’s (they are bunk beds which have been separated) and when he visits we could share rooms for a few days on the bunk beds and, as for his stuff, we didn’t exactly realize how much crap (mostly papers he refuses to get rid of, maps and conlangs and such) he owned. This is all fine and good, right? let the guy live in a new basement room, right? That could do not harm, right? WRONG. In the ten years my family has lived in this particular house, we have built three walls and half-completed a bathroom in which we installed the shower knobs backwards. the idea of me ever getting that room before I head to college myself is now slim to none, unless I want to hold off on college for about seventy years.
I really want, and in many ways need, that room. My closet is stuffed with spy-gear crap from when I was little, and my mom says I can’t go through my possessions to pick what to throw away until I move, which means until I start to move I can’t use three-fourths of my closet. My bed is tiny and the mattress is quite uncomfortable (oddly enough his bed is bigger then mine, which is weird because they are separated bunk beds… this is because the top bunk was smaller because it was designed so that little kids could more easily climb the latter, which was tilted). Another point is that my dresser is so old, and the drawers, which are not on tracks or anything, can take two minutes each to open when full (they are seldom not full, as they are so small) as opposed to his dresser which has more drawers which are bigger and easier to open and close. Also, there is an old windows 95 PC set up in there, which is lots of fun to tinker around with because it has tons (upwards of 100) of awesome old games installed on it. My brother does not technically own it but somehow it got set up in his room and he messes with all the settings and password protects it, and says that he’ll give me the password when I move in. Also, because I am an avid reader and have no room for any bookshelves in my room, The best that I can do with my collection of books is stack them atop my sad excuse for a desk if there is room (which is rare) or on the floor in neat stacks and yell at people who walk too near them. this words okay, but it’s harder to dig through books which are stacked atop each other than it is to get a book out of books held upright among one another, and over time the books that get less use sink to the bottom of the pile get all dog-eared, which is, needless to say, unacceptable. He promised me one of the bookcases in that room, which is one of the things that I look forward to most eagerly, but it’s full of books and papers and I can’t use it because, not only is it occupied, but I’m not allowed to touch anything in his room at all (it is still HIS room, you know).
Forgive my whining, but I really need his room. what can I do to make it more possible f

Natural Disaster earthquake excape plan HELP!?

September 6th, 2010

What if all water lines were shut off for 4 days and you had to remain in your home. Where would you get your water for drinking and for sanitary use? How much water should you store per day per family member for drinking? How much food and what kind of food should you have for at least 4 days?

After an earthquake, sometimes you will have no electricity and gas for several days or even a week, what other types of supplies should you have in your home in case of an emergency? Where would you store your supplies?

Where are your shut-off valves for gas, water and electricity? What type of tools will you need to shut of these utilities?

What kind of supplies should you keep in your car if you have to stay in your car for a period of 8-hours on a cold winter evening?

What could you do now to your home to secure items on bookcases and shelves?

Any creative idea on how to create a cat-proof lid for the aquarium I plan on keeping gerbils in?

September 4th, 2010

So I’ve been strongly considering getting two gerbils, which I would keep in a 10 gallon aquarium (as opposed to a plastic or metal cage that they can chew through). However, I have two cats, and both of them have claws. The standard lid for this kind of aquarium would just be a mesh top, but I’m concerned that it wouldn’t be strong enough to support the weight of one of my cats climbing on top, or it might rip if the cats clawed at it. Does anyone have any ideas for how I can create a cat-proof lid?

Just some extra info…
– I was thinking of maybe using a smell that cats dislike, such as citronella oil, but I’m worried that it might harm the gerbils. Does anyone know about this?
– I can’t keep my cats out of my bedroom (where the gerbils will be) because the house has shifted, and my door no longer closes completely
– I have a tall bookcase I could potentially set the cage on, but I’m worried about the cats trying to jump up there and knocking things off (like the cage)! Thoughts?

Thanks so much for your help… unless I find a good solution, I won’t be able to get gerbils.

What furniture color would you suggest for this room?

September 2nd, 2010

I’ve started to remodel my room and I need help! To give you an idea…..

I’m painting my walls this color: http://i37.tinypic.com/mt88yx.png
The crown molding and trim will be white.
The floors will be this color: http://www.armstrong.com/flooring/laminate/blizzard-pine-wood-plank-L8703/floor-114379.asp

It’s going to be a very neutral room. I’m planning on getting colorful bedding and hanging up art to give the room some flair. The problem is…I don’t know what color furniture I should purchase! I’m going to get a bedside table, a desk, and two bookcases…

I don’t know whether to go with white furniture because I don’t know if that will make the room too stark white…and then, I don’t want to get wood furniture because I hate when different wood colors clash within one room :/ ARGH! What do you think? White or some kind of wood color?

What would be in your dream classroom?

August 31st, 2010

We are building a new school in the next few years. The teachers have been asked to submit a “Dream Classroom Plan”, what we would get if we had unlimited resources.

I need help! My mind has gone blank!

I already have an Elmo, a large TV, a projector and a microphone system in my classroom.

These are my ideas/student ideas so far for my 7th grade Language Arts classroom:

Dimensions:

Large enough to have a student desk area, a teacher area, a reading circle area, and an open area for movement in class.

Ceilings high enough to hang projects.

Soothing Zen-like paint colors.

Hardwood floor (or a nice fake laminate) or stone like tiles (slate???).

Windows that open with heavy shades for when we use media.

Furniture:

Desks- not tables! Moveable, stackable with unconnected chairs with foot covers so they don’t scratch the tile.

Deep bookcases to hold classroom texts (both sets!), novels, workbooks and the classroom library.

Foldable chairs or pod chairs for the reading circle.

Carpets, mats, pillows for reading

Countertops or tables for extra work space.

Cabinets and closets for storage of foldable chairs and pillows/mats.

Sink- for hand washing, cleaning and access to water.

Ample power outlets

Exercise balls for chairs at desks

White boards

Cork Boards

Electronics/Technology:

Laptops for every student

Soothing light, non fluorescent (desk lamps??)

iPods for each student, to listen to recorded books

Activ/Smart Board

Can you think of any glaring oversight? Would you add anything to the list?

Outdated Wood Trim?

August 29th, 2010

My boyfriend and I are apartment hunting, and we’ve managed to find a favorite- close to both our jobs, great floor plan, in our price range, nice community. Only problem is, the wood trim is so ugly- i’m talking all the doors, the cabinets, the closet doors, and these big built-in bookcases in the living room. It looks like it’s 50 years old. Obviously since it’s an apartment we couldn’t replace it, and we’re not sure yet if we’d be allowed to paint… so I was wondering, is there any certain color schemes or other tricks we could use that would offset it or modernize it a little?
To answer one of the questions… it’s stained, and it’s a really dark, ashy sort of brown. Kind of difficult to describe. I suppose I shouldn’t really say outdated, but it looks like my great-grandma’s kitchen cupboards.

How do you think a gold, red, and black themed room would look?

August 25th, 2010

I’m redecorating my room, and I’m hoping for dark red walls, with red and black and gold accessories. However, I don’t think my parents will agree to red walls. They want the house to be easy to sell, and are very picky about ‘permanent’ changes, such as paint. My back up plan would be gold walls, and have red and black accessories.
My bed is red, and my dresser and bookcases are very dark, almost black.
I’d like to hang up some beaded curtains to create sort of a miniature side room, where I’ll do my art and studying. I’d also like to use the beaded curtains instead of doors for the closet.
What do you think?
Any suggestions?
I’m a female teen. <3
Thank you!!

The Skull Necklace

Weird Thoughts, weird events.

A young, beautiful lady, appearing to be in the middle stages of her twenties, held in her arms a precious brand-new baby. A moment ago the baby was in a hand-weaved basket left outside in the freezing winter coldness. It felt like a blizzard, but it wasn’t. The baby had two blankets on her, and toys and clothes. Someone knocked on the door politely and then left before the lady could see the stranger’s face. She decided to keep the baby as her own child. The lady had been planning a child, but not to come up on her front porch. She didn’t plan for it to happen on such a cold night either.
The lady had brown eyes, blond hair, and freckles. She used glasses for reading a book, but for cooking and sleeping and working, she kept them off. Her name was Anneliese. It sounded like royalty, but honestly, she was poorer than anyone in the village. At least she lived there in the first place. The lady had a beautiful house. It was white on the outside, and looked like a palace where a queen and king would live
The little baby had green eyes and tiny brown hairs sticking out of her head here and there. There was a skull necklace that hung around her neck. Beautiful. The skull was silver and the rest of the medallion was black. On the front of the skull was written in cursive and gold letters:

Serena

So Anneliese called the baby Serena Skull because Serena was a beautiful name and because a skull necklace was the first thing Anneliese saw when she looked at the baby. Serena enjoyed playing just like any ordinary baby, but still Anneliese knew there was something different about the baby. Something she couldn’t figure out.

After the incident of Serena being dropped off at a stranger’s front porch and being taken in as their own she became grown up. Serena was now a ten-year-old. Her brown hair grew out long to the middle of back. She still had pure emerald-green eyes. The weird thing was that when Serena was a baby the skull necklace fit her perfectly, but it still fit her perfectly. She surely had a bigger neck then a baby’s, but there was no mistake that the skull necklace was really her size. The silver and black still looked shiny and brand-new. The carved, gold letters of Serena’s name outshined anything on the medallion.
Serena stayed in her room for a minute. Then she brushed her long brown hair and put the contacts in her eyes. She turned herself around on the chair that could spin around and lean back. She picked up her book.
Serena walked down the steps and sat down in the main room. She sat down on a couch. The couch was a dark red color, almost maroon. It actually did look like rich people lived in that house. There was bookcases all around the room filled with books in all shapes and sizes. Against the wall was a plasma TV. It was very shiny. She read her book she had just got about skulls from the local library. What did skulls actually, really mean? She was about to find out. It was specifically about the symbol of a skull. It read:

The symbol of the skull is simple if you know what a skull is. The skulls are the head of a human body underneath your hair and skin. But without thinking of the skull in your head, think of your ancestors. There are very many myths about pirates having skull medallions.

Serena paused. She held up her skull medallion to her face and observed it. It didn’t look like a pirate’s sign. But then again, she really didn’t know. Serena had to read on to actually know. She put it back down again. Then, she continued reading the book.

Actually, the skull medallions come from witches and wizards, the good ones. They joined a group long ago called “The Skull Group”. It’s very obvious, yet secret. No one could get in unless the leader of the skulls allowed it. Their slogan was “We fight ‘till death!”. These wizards and witches had dragons. Dragons are mythical creatures that many mortals say are not true, but they are. They can come in many colors, but you mostly see dragons in red. Blue dragons are very, very rare. And once they have a baby they would give the medallion to the baby and the dragon goes with it‘s new owner or owners. If they have twins then the kid’s are both the owners of the dragon. If they have two kids, but one is older, then the older one will get the dragon until twenty and they will switch off every ten years.

Serena put down the book and held her medallion in her hand tightly. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She couldn’t be. She couldn’t be! Wait…if she was a wizard then where was her dragon? Why had her mother and father left? Why haven’t they come back to get her? So many questions raced through Serena’s mind. So many answers left out there in the open world. Serena finally opened her eyes and shut the book with a huge noise.
Everything went too quickly. Serena erased the thoughts fro
