A Miter saw to cut the wood ,hammer and nails or, if you want too , a "brad gun" comes in handy for this type of work, glue is a good thing. A tape measure, pencil and I always use glue before nailing but not absolutely needed. The right amount of wood...1 x 's are good...1x4,1x6, 1x12's...? whatever size you want to make it...for added strength you can use 2x 's but it is gonna' be heavy!

Assuming you have the wood cut to the proper sizes (they do this free of charge at Lowes if you buy the wood there), you can use nails or screws. If nailing, use finishing nails, if screwing, buy a drill. You also need a tape measure, a level, a few pencils, not really glue but it doesn't hurt either, a hammer, maybe a screw driver or two, some sand paper (depending on what type of would you use). A drill and some drill bits is useful whether you are using nails or not (you may not want your shelves fixed, you may want them adjustable using those plastic shelf holders).

The first bookcase I ever made, and this dates back about 35 years, was a simple pine box frame where the top and bottom were joined to the sides with simple butt joints using nails to fasten the joints. The shelves were cut to fit between the side pieces and were fastened to the sides (also butt joints) with nails. The back, a piece of quarter inch plywood, was simply tacked onto the back side of the frame using inch long brads nailed into the frame pieces (top, bottom and sides) and shelves. I used dimensioned lumber that I purchased from my local lumberyard and I used a hand saw to cut all of the pieces to length. I still have that bookcase and it is just as sturdy, and looks just as good, as the day that I built it. I have since completed many woodworking projects of increasing complexity, culminating in a set of floor to ceiling wall to wall built in bookcase units with adjustable shelves covering about fifteen feet over the span of two perpinducular walls. I used several power tools to complete this project including a table saw, a circular saw and a router to route grooves to inset the shelf standards into the sides of the bookcases and to route several types of decorative edges onto various face frame members. But the aforementioned bookcase that I built 35 years ago with simple hand tools and simple butt joinery is one of my most prized possessions and fills me with pride every time I look at it. Have fun with your project.

I've had two brothers leave for college. We didn't always get along the best, fought over stuff that seems ridiculous, things similar to the situation you're in now.

Here's what I recommend - Keep your rooms as they are for now, let your brother have his old room while he's away at college. If he's only an hour away, you can bet he'll be home every weekend to do his laundry and scrounge up a few free meals, and I'm sure knowing he still has a private space to live in will make that better.

In the long run, he'll really appreciate the support he receives from his little sis while he starts the next, scary step of life.

Clean out your closet, throw away and donate whatever. Your mom is being ridiculous about cleaning your closet. Hell I had to clean the closet out every 6 months or so. Talk to your mom, tell her you're willing to do all the work (lots of Charity's have scheduled pick-ups, look for one in your area). Tell her it's just silly to have useless items clogging up what little space you have.

Buy some storage bins, accordion folders etc and move your brothers crap into the basement. I don't care about holiday visits, this is your room. The one little space in the house your parents granted you and yet there's no room for your belongings! Why should you live out of boxes in someone else's room?

If you have to store your brothers belongings and your own in one room, then by right you should get the big room and your sisters the 2 small ones. Your parents are probably being difficult with you taking over the room completely because they don't want your brother to feel like he can't come home because there's no room. Therefore, even though he might only stay in that room a few weeks a year you're still sharing a room and are entitled to the big room.

If your parents tell you to just wait for the basement then politely point out that they're too busy to take on another project considering the bathroom is still unfinished.

Ask your mom to come into the room. Have her sit on the bed and look around, show her that there's no room for your stuff. Tell her you appreciate everything she has given you and now you'd just like a proper place to store it. Tell her that you don't think you're being unreasonable to ask for whats fair.

If all else fails tell them you don't want to OCCUPY your brothers room just so your sister can have her own space. Why should you be forced to share a cramped room while your sisters have their own space?
