To Do It Right You Need Good Bookcase Plans

Building A BookcaseSo, I had decided I wanted a bookcase. My first thought was – bookcase plans. I had already decided that to buy was just out of my reach. Were there plans available? Expensive? Easy to understand? (remember, I’m a complete newbie at woodworking projects)

Once I had found a good source of woodworking plans (more than 12 000 from a simple to read eBook and it cost me next to nothing) which had a number of good looking plans for bookcases, I was then left with a further bunch of choices.

It was time to look at the bookcase design. Did I want a bookcase bench? Did I want built in bookcase plans? A corner bookcase? Or bookcase headboard plans? Tall bookcase? Short bookcase? 2, 3, 4, or 5 shelf bookcase? and so on

Once I had decided on that option (5 shelf freestanding) it came time to look into bookcase wood. Just ordinary pine or did I want to go for a harder wood (but then the finishing becomes more involved). Eventually settled on the pine option with a good varnish finish

I had decided to follow these bookcase plans to the ‘t’. I didn’t want to end up with a ‘woodworking bookcase’. You know the one that is so poorly built that it never leaves the workshop. It ends up being the spot where everything is stored from used glue tubes to old well used wood working plans. Covered in splashes of paint and varnish. And it looks as if it’s going to fall apart at any moment. So the motto was ‘do it well or not at all’

I had the feeling in the beginning I should have attended a few woodworking classes. But as I live a long way from any thing educational decided to just go for it. It was an interesting project and without decent bookcase plans I’m pretty sure would not have turned out as well as it did. Nothing to write home about but solid and looks good even if I say so myself.

Confidence is up so I’m now looking at the rest of the furniture plans in the eBook I bought and I’ll be trying something a bit more ambitious very soon. Turns out woodworking is a great hobby.
