Outdated Wood Trim?

August 29th, 2010

My boyfriend and I are apartment hunting, and we’ve managed to find a favorite- close to both our jobs, great floor plan, in our price range, nice community. Only problem is, the wood trim is so ugly- i’m talking all the doors, the cabinets, the closet doors, and these big built-in bookcases in the living room. It looks like it’s 50 years old. Obviously since it’s an apartment we couldn’t replace it, and we’re not sure yet if we’d be allowed to paint… so I was wondering, is there any certain color schemes or other tricks we could use that would offset it or modernize it a little?
To answer one of the questions… it’s stained, and it’s a really dark, ashy sort of brown. Kind of difficult to describe. I suppose I shouldn’t really say outdated, but it looks like my great-grandma’s kitchen cupboards.

Is it possible to remove baseboard heat (hot water) from one wall of a room?

August 7th, 2010

The house was built in 1970 with hot water baseboards that take up 2 walls in every room. I would like to eventually have built-in bookcases added in the living room, which would require removal of the baseboard along one wall and a couple feet of the other wall. How feasible would this be? Would we have sufficient heat coming out afterward?
Yes, there is a full basement. And, unfortunately, yes, the thermostat is also in the same room.

How do you measure the square footage of a small living room?

July 23rd, 2010

Need to make sure I’m buying enough for a new hardwood flooring project I’m about to venture on. I am the worst @ figuring out distances or measurements – I can’t calculate for the life of me and need anyone’s expertise in this area! I have yet to actually measure my living room – I am going to assume it’s 13 x something – not sure – well, I can tell you I have a large sofa, loveseat, 2 entertainment stands, 2 narrow bookcases, a small table amongst other items and I still have a huge space for my son to run around…. hope this helps a bit!

How can I get some peace with my cat indoors?

July 21st, 2010

I’ve just adopted a cat. She’s just been spayed and her tummy was shaved for the operation. The shelter said to keep newly spayed cats indoors for the first two weeks so that other cats can’t try to mate with her while she heals. Also, it gets cold here overnight and she doesn’t have that belly fur to protect her and keep her warm. Therefore, I keep her in the guest room overnight. I won’t let her have the run of the house unsupervised since I restrict her from climbing onto tables, bookcases and countertops. Besides, there are breakable things in the living room and kitchen. I also keep her out of the master bedroom (I know that what she really wants is to come and sleep on top of Mommy and Daddy) because I suffer from insomnia, so every little movement from her will disturb my sleep. Her room has her food, water, toys, blanket and litterbox in it. The problem is that after I close her into her room before I go off to bed, she raises hell and won’t shut up. What can I do?

Decorating "formal" living room…?

July 11th, 2010

My husband and I bought a new house!! We have 2 areas that could be the living room so we are making the other one with the tv. we’ve decided to make this a comforable relaxing space.
I’ve chosen the paint color http://www.buyaurapaint.com/ac-20-2oz.html
It’s a great color, i think. It’s greenish/gray..maybe?
Anyways this room has a bay window. I plan on putting a rocking chair in it, an antique lawyers bookcase and a green sofa in it. I have lamps and some antique tables that will be used as end tables. Other then that: i have no idea as far as other things to put in the room, including wall art. What are some suggestions?
Thanks

Is it possible to anchor bookcases to a mirrored wall?

July 7th, 2010

We are moving into a place where the living room has a large mirrored wall. The other wall has the window on it so we don’t want to block that. (The other two sides of the room are open to the entry and dining room.) Our four bookcases + TV stand will fit perfectly on the wall.

However, we have a 2 year old daughter and a baby on the way. We are planning to stay in this new apartment for at least a few years so both will be toddlers/preschoolers here. Currently we have our bookcases attached to the wall with brackets, but we can’t put screws into the mirror, obviously.

What I am wondering is whether there is something like a heavy-duty velcro strap that has adhesive (heavy duty of course) that sticks to the mirrored surface rather than being mechanically fastened into it. Or any other options?

The other thing we thought of was bracketing the whole shebang together, then attaching brackets to the walls on either side (it may be a couple inch stretch but maybe possible).
Unfortunately it is 4 large mirrors, approx. 3 feet wide by however tall the room is, probably 8 feet tall. So we can’t take out a small section. :(

re-painting my living room and need suggestions!?

July 4th, 2010

I will be re-painting my living room soon and still can’t decide on a color. I know I want to stay neutral, but not sure what will go with my furniture. Problem is I have way too many colors going on in my living room. TV/Entertainment stand & wall shelves are black, carpet is dark green, a wood colored table & bookcase, and a red & blue couch. We do plan on getting a new (matching) couch and loveseat but that won’t be for another year or so. The window is huge and the sunlight pours in the LR, and the wall is cut out to view the kitchen, which contains light brown paneling. I’m thinking of going with a tan or beige color for the walls, but it’s the green carpet that throws me off on making this choice.

I have a light yellow color on the bedroom walls so I don’t want to go with this again. Also should I paint the hallway the same color, or go with something else? Everything is so close together that I just want it to blend. I currently have a medium green in the hallway and hate it.

Any suggestions other than white paint would be nice. My trim will be white.

Does anyone know how much they charge?
