I’m looking to build a computer desk for my new apartment. I am in college, so something cheap would be nice, but I also want it sturdy. I was thinking of particle board, but would that be strong enough? Any alternatives?

July 18th, 2010My husband and I are moving to a new apartment. We have fairly large furniture: a sectional couch, 2 large bookcases, a tv w stand, and two thin cabinets with dvds/vhs movies. Our home is decorated in beach decor. I am looking for a good idea of what to do with a small area under the stairs of our new place. It can be seen from the entrance, and I have no idea what to do. We have two small children, so maybe a play area? I would appreciate any design ideas.

Is it possible to anchor bookcases to a mirrored wall?
July 7th, 2010We are moving into a place where the living room has a large mirrored wall. The other wall has the window on it so we don’t want to block that. (The other two sides of the room are open to the entry and dining room.) Our four bookcases + TV stand will fit perfectly on the wall.
However, we have a 2 year old daughter and a baby on the way. We are planning to stay in this new apartment for at least a few years so both will be toddlers/preschoolers here. Currently we have our bookcases attached to the wall with brackets, but we can’t put screws into the mirror, obviously.
What I am wondering is whether there is something like a heavy-duty velcro strap that has adhesive (heavy duty of course) that sticks to the mirrored surface rather than being mechanically fastened into it. Or any other options?
The other thing we thought of was bracketing the whole shebang together, then attaching brackets to the walls on either side (it may be a couple inch stretch but maybe possible).
Unfortunately it is 4 large mirrors, approx. 3 feet wide by however tall the room is, probably 8 feet tall. So we can’t take out a small section.

What should I use to clean furniture contaminated by mold that won't hurt particleboard and wood finishes?
June 28th, 2010I recently moved all of my furniture that had been in a climate-controlled storage unit for 1 year into my new apartment. My couch grew mold in the storage unit, so I threw it out. The rest of my furniture is primarily particleboard (bookcases, dressers, etc.) and some wood. What should I use to clean this furniture to make sure that there is no mold on it and that won’t destroy the furniture? Thank you!
