Can you give me ideas/help for decorating single guy's house?

August 25th, 2010

I’m a thirty-year-old single guy. I like dogs, the outdoors, my Jeep Wrangler, autumn, good wine, travel, photography…

I’m trying to integrate my "likes" into my home. I have painted my living/dining room two colors of khaki, and a chalkboard-green wall. I have a brown leather couch, and walnut tables and bookcases. I’ve also remodeled my guest bathroom – new flooring, hardware, paint, etc.

However, I’m trying to get ideas on decorating… accent pieces, dining room furniture, bedroom furniture (blank slate right now) and my own bathroom. I need help finding websites for "bachelor pads" and masculine design (not a lot of flowery-things). I’d like to redo the kitchen with the small tiles as a backsplash.

I’d like to find websites/books/magazines that show off a masculine home. Pictures are a must!!

The main goals are to have a cool guy’s house and up the resale value.

Serious responses only… any help is appreciated. Thanks!
As I said, folks… I need pictures, websites, magazines, etc. While I appreciate the suggestions, does no one know of ANY place to LOOK at pictures to get ideas? That’s what I’m wanting.

How do I install a curtain rod that will hide a floor to ceiling bookcase?

June 24th, 2010

I’m moving into a smaller apartment and I’m trying to be creative about storage space. My solution is to use a cheap bookcase from my parent’s garage and cover it with a curtain. I figure that I can hang the curtain rod from the 8" ceiling but my challenge is how to cover the 24" sides. I basically need a rod that is shaped like |_________|. Do they make that?

Is there a good way to remove water stains from wood?

May 30th, 2010

Recently my apartment flooded. I own two unfinished oak bookcases which were on wet carpet and absorbed water into the base along the front and sides. There is a watermark and some greenish discoloration of the wood. One bookcase has about 1" of water staining and the other 3" +/-. Most of the damages is to the oak ply sides of the bookcase where the end grain was resting on the floor. Is there any way to remove the staining and watermarks from the wood? Sanding? Any sort of finishing techniques? A solvent of any kind? I’d like to restore rather than replace the bookcases if possible.

Where in San Francisco or the East Bay can I find Ergonomic computer desks?

May 13th, 2010

And please don’t tell me Office Depot, Office Max, Fry’s, Best Buy,Target, etc. Been there, done that. I imagine that there must be an independent furniture store somewhere that carries this type of item, or at least can special order out of a catalogue. I am looking for something that is tall, but narrow, like computer table with a hutch or shelves above the monitor area no more than 35" wide.
